Light & Life Elementary School year is from January - end of October and November is used for Teacher Training - Here is a 2009 November report from principal Carlos about the Training. The month of November the staff worked together as a team. The first week of the month was dedicated to reviewing the Guatemalan National Curriculum and adapting it to the specific situation in Salquil. We decided to edit it in Word with the idea that the students would be able to color the some of the examples already existing in the curriculum. It would also be a better way to print the material if necessary. It would print without colors or other notations, since in the original PDF, it's not possible to color or signal certain parts that have already been taught. Report from Principal- Carlos
The second week, we prepared teaching materials for the 2010 school year. Examples of these materials are charts for conduct, attendance, health, and class rules.

The remaining two weeks were for preparing books in Ixil. Stories were created in rough draft. They were read to be certain that they have a beginning, a climax, and a revealing and resolution to the problem presented. The story was read to be certain it had a "thread" of thought. This was a very pleasant experience because it re-enforced Ixil grammar while developing useful materials. Everyone was able to learn his own errors and and correct them while reading the stories.

Once the stories were written, we thought about the illustrations and the number of pages the book needed to have. During this process, the number of paragraphs each page should have was decided. Making these books everyone helped everyone else according to the knowledge each one had.

This month passed as thought it were a week because we hardly realized that the month was over. We're very satisfied with our work, with the staff, the preparation of the teaching materials, and proud of our finished books that are ready to use in 2010. We hope and desire that next November we'll be able to produce more books since it is a basic tool for teaching our students.

Thank you for the funding that you sent us for this project. Without materials, we can do nothing. Technology helps us with this work, also. It is a question of taking advantage and using the recourses that we do have.
